What is instructional design?

“creation of learning experiences and materials in a manner that results in the acquisition and application of knowledge and skills” (Association for Talent Development). A good instructional designer is necessary to maximize learning outcomes, no matter in online learning or in-person learning spaces. There are some common instructional design frameworks:

• The ADDIE model
• Merrill’s Principles of Instruction
• Gagne’s Nine Events of Instructions
• Backward Design
• Design Thinking
• Fink’s Significant Learning Model
• ARCS model

When you already know how to make a good lesson plan, create a learning outcome becomes a good ability that you need to master. Here are some useful advice:

For the component, using ABCD structure.

Follow the 3Ms (NICOLE CROZIER)

• Meaningful: How does the outcome support a broader goal?
• Manageable: What is needed to foster the achievement of the outcome? Is the outcome realistic?
• Measurable: How will you know if the outcome is achieved? What is the assessment method?

Avoid following traps ((NICOLE CROZIER):

• As described in the video, outcomes should relate to real-world application, and not parts of the learning activity. The outcome isn’t “watch a video” or “participate in a discussion.” What are you hoping students achieve by participating in those activities?
• Make sure you are using verbs from Bloom’s taxonomy, and no vague verbs like understand, know, learn, become aware of, etc. Learning outcomes should be measurable, and those verbs make measurement impossible.
• Don’t include multiple outcomes in one learning outcome statement. It’s sometimes tempting to write an outcome such as “…list 5 resources on campus and explain what they do.” That’s actually asking two things though- list AND explain.
